Like spiraling currents of oil in water, our universe consists of swirling flows of energy. From electromagnetic waves, whose interactions account for much of what we know of as physical existence, to fundamental strings of vibration that construct almost every known aspect of reality, and finally to the unnamed energies that manifest existence itself; our perception of daily life shows us only a tiny cross-section of these energies.

If you were to mix a bit of black paint into a bucket of white paint, you would see the magnificent spiraling patterns that form on the surface. However, these patterns do not only exist on the surface, they in fact exist throughout the entire bucket. The patterns the observer is seeing represent only one particular cross-section to which they are exposed (the top). If you could freeze this bucket, and then slice off a portion; you could expose a new cross-section and therefore a new pattern for observation. In much the same way, we are in certain dimensions or cross-sections of a much broader existence. The fact that we see structures that appear to look different than swirling energy is due to the limits of perspective in our cross-section we call space-time.

“Stream of Consciousness” refers to a branch of endeavor that uses those aforementioned currents of energy to affect the flow of progress and ultimately the outcome of the work itself. In fact, Stream of Consciousness is not just a branch of art, but a fundamental fact of reality. In that you cannot escape the fact of flows and streams of reality in your environment (as it is itself created by them), you cannot escape the fact that your consciousness moves through and is effected by veins and flows of energy and reality in that environment.

Reality is flowing energy.

This is often the focus of my photography. That is, to use a Stream of Consciousness approach in order to expose and capture a “snap shot” of the swirling energies of reality. In this, I try not to overly stage my pictures but rather use the elements of my environment as they are to affect the flow of photons into the aperture of my camera. By exposing particular cross-sections of our environment which we do not normally come across in our daily lives, I hope to convey to others that there is beauty all around us, all the time, on levels and perspectives we may never even consider.

Our brains sub-consciously impose natural preconceptions (such as spatial perception, object orientation, conceptual association, etc.) on the sensory data to which they consciously give focus. To try and offset these fundamental preconceptions, I often use the negative filter in my camera. This helps to present the image to the brain in a way that does not invoke the common preconceptions associated with daily life. I believe this can help us to remember and familiarize ourselves with the fundamental “look” of reality.

Also, while I have much respect for image manipulating computer programs, I have chosen not to alter these pictures after they where taken. I feel this is more true to the Stream of Consciousness method; as I am trying to represent a particular two dimensional cross-section of the flow of energy that actually existed when the picture was taken.

I developed my understanding of Stream of Consciousness method from my pin & ink drawings. After noticing that a drawing often “felt” like certain aspects of the environment in which it was drawn, I developed the idea that with practice, one could perceive and even trace certain flows of energy in their environment or at least allow those currents to influence the flow of their own drawing. This lead me to believe that by embracing Stream of Consciousness in my drawing, I may be allowing my brain to represent many of the same relative proportions in my drawing, that were existing in the environment at the time of drawing.

Ultimately, I would like for my artwork to help people consider the nature of their existence, their environment, their place in that environment, who they are, what their consciousness is, and the structure of reality itself; but if that’s a bit to much, I hope that my artwork can at least effect a positive feeling in those who view it.

Thank you for taking the moment to read some of my ideas.

Best wishes,
-BC

Tired and lonely. Sitting and staring
Weak and filthy. No longer caring
Wasting to nothing. The rubble of you
Hoping for something. Poison where love grew
